Our Featured Breeder this month comes to us from the beautiful Ozark highlands region of southwest Missouri, where Joseph and Gail Mailloux of Two Silos Farm breed classic Egyptian Arabian horses. They’ve had the good fortune to have bred some beautiful young horses who have gone on to successes in the show ring and in breeding programs all over the world. This year, the Pyramid Society awarded Two Silos Farm an Egyptian Event Breeding Excellence Award.
In 2009 Two Silos Farm imported World Champion Hadidi (right) into the US to join their breeding program; he is one of the most decorated Egyptian Arabians in history. Immediately after completing quarantine Hadidi was collected and frozen by Select Breeders in Maryland. Gail explains, “Hadidi is still settling mares by cooled semen at age 21, but having the frozen semen backup helps us breathe a little easier. Knowing he is ‘preserved for the ages’ ensures that we will have access to him as a sire long into the future.” Gail feels that having this form of insurance takes away the risk and helps people move forward in their business, which ultimately is good for the horse industry.
Select Breeders assisted Two Silos Farm further in 2011 with the import of another exciting addition to their breeding program, this time a mare, Zakeyat, bred by the El Zahraa Stud, Cairo Egypt. At the time Zakeyat was located in Italy, after purchase she was transported to SBS North Germany where she was bred to Emiratus B and cared for until she passed her 120 day pregnancy check and could continue on her journey to the US. Gail shares an inspiring story of Zakeyat’s travels and some beautiful photos on her website. Zakeyat pictured arriving at Two Silos Farm (left) and meeting Hadidi (below).
“SBS is an International network of support for us. The Egyptian Arabian horse industry is very active world wide, even in today’s market. It helps to know the utmost level of expertise is available to us almost anywhere. We can count on excellent communication and service no matter what country we are in!” Gail Mailloux, Two Silos Farm
Just like Gail and Joseph, SBS will be anxiously awaiting the arrival of Zakeyat’s foal next year. At SBS we take pride in the small role we play in making our clients dreams become a reality. We wish Two Silos Farm all the best with their breeding program and look forward to working with them again in the future!
