Some of us may work in the confines of four walls with the benefits of heating and air conditioning. But for others, the great outdoors with wide open pastures and prairies are their “office”. It would be very difficult for them to get their jobs done without a great partner in their horse. That is where breeders like Mike and Robin Stewart of Munday, TX with her parents and partners Robert and Jamie Weaver come in. They started breeding Quarter Horses approximately 40 years ago because their family enjoys working with horses and raising colts.
The Stewarts own two ranch and working cow stallions with some celebrity names in their pedigrees. Big Cat Galarraga (photo below right) is by the famed cutting stallion, High Brow Cat, and out of the mare Playboys Ruby (by Freckles Playboy). Their other stallion, Some Prefer Whiskey (photo above left) is by Paddys Irish Whiskey (foals have won over 22 World Championships) and the mare MS Becaco Dungin (great granddaughter of Dash For Cash and Tanquery Gin). Both stallions are still used on the ranch. The Stewart’s son, Pate, also shows Some Prefer Whiskey in Ranch Horse Association of America competitions and for the Texas Tech ranch horse team.
Though pasture breeding their horses is common place on the ranch the Stewarts had the 6666 Ranch, an SBS affiliate lab, process frozen semen from both their stallions. When asked how they utilize frozen semen in their breeding program Robin said,
“Normally our stallions pasture breed but sometimes it is more convenient for us and our customers to use frozen semen for artificial insemination.”
Through the technology and expertise offered by the 6666 Ranch and SBS they have been able to expand their breeding program.
Over many years of hard work and dedication Mike and Robin along with her parents are gaining a reputation as being known for breeding good quality, ranch type horses to be enjoyed by all.
