Nestled in the Rio Verde Foothills section of the “West’s Most Western Town”, Scottsdale, AZ, is Scottsdale Equine Reproduction Center (SERC). They are proud to be one of the newest additions to the SBS Affiliate Laboratory network. The Sonoran Desert offers great weather and a diverse population of breeds and disciplines. SERC is able to take advantage of a very long breeding season and a climate that enables them to deliver foals very early in the year without the complications of a harsh winter environment. There are large Quarter Horse and Arabian Horse populations in the area but they also assist clients with other breeds including Warmbloods, Gypsy Vanners, American Saddlebreds, Andalusians, Friesians, Lusitanos, and many more.
The main service areas offered by SERC are Mare Foaling, Stallion Collection and Freezing, Mare Artificial Breeding with fresh, cooled or frozen semen, plus Embryo Transfer and Vitrification Services.
The facility is staffed 24 hours a day to closely monitor expectant mares. The foal watching team utilizes 15 video monitored maternity stalls so they are ever present for the three o’clock in the morning delivery. Other mare services include breeding soundness evaluations, artificial insemination, embryo transfers, and embryo vitrification.
A full range of services is provided to stallion owners which include breeding soundness evaluations, phantom training, routine collections for cooled semen shipments and semen freezing. SERC is a USDA approved facility for semen export and proud to be a Select Breeders Affiliate Lab. The lab is equipped with the latest technology to provide the quality of semen expected from Select Breeders Service.
Scottsdale Equine Reproduction Center is owned and operated by G. R.(Jerry) Longworth, VMD. Dr. Longworth earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from Rutgers University and received his veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania. After starting his career in equine practice in southeastern Pennsylvania he relocated to Arizona in 2000. Finding a need for a standalone, multi-breed equine reproduction facility, Dr. Longworth opened Scottsdale Equine Reproduction Center to compliment his very busy mobile equine practice. Dr. Longworth is aided by his longtime assistant, Rachel Weese. Rachel spearheads SERC’s efforts with Select Breeders Service. Rachel is an extremely talented stallion handler and takes a special interest in semen freezing. For more information about their services Dr. Longworth or Rachel will be happy to assist you.
