Equine Veterinary & Laboratory Technician

Description

This is a full-time position with both Select Breeders Services (SBS) and Select Breeders Veterinary Services (SBS-VS).This is a cross-trained position that will work within the SBS laboratory and SBS-VS.  The position reports to the SBS-VS Head Veterinary Technician and will perform those duties as identified under "veterinary technician" and "laboratory technician" below.

Responsibilities as Veterinary Technician:

  • Safely restrain neonatal foals and adult equines for veterinary procedures
  • Administer medications to horses as directed by veterinarian.
  • Assist with daily horse care including occasional stall cleaning, feeding, watering, turn-out and grooming when required.  Must be able to lift and move water buckets, bales of straw and hay.
  • Maintain medical records (filing and tracking).
  • Assist with scheduling of incoming and outgoing horses, and daily veterinary appointments.
  • Assist with client communication regarding arrival and departure of horses.
  • Coordinate with Vet Tech Manager and Equine Facilities Manager regarding the logistics of housing an ever-changing population of mares.
  • Performing evening barn checks when scheduled.
  • Fill in for foal watch shifts when necessary.

Skills Required:

  • Horsemanship, horse care and general horse handling.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs and Wise Option equine management software.
  • Fundamental understanding of equine reproduction and breeding management.
  • Hold a valid driver's license and be able to drive a standard size pickup truck with attached trailer.
  • Experience working as an equine vet tech is required.
  • Experience working as a small animal vet tech is preferred but not required.
  • Certification as a Veterinary Technician would be beneficial but is not required.

Responsibilities as Veterinary Technician:

Overall Laboratory Maintenance
  • In-house Quality Control cleaning program
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Laboratory supply inventory
  • Maintain daily and weekly logs
  • USDA collection log, Daily Activities
  • Laboratory billing sheets
Cooled and Frozen Semen Processing
  • Assist with and perform resident, trailer-in and mobile lab stallion collections
  • Processing semen collections for cooled semen distribution
  • Prepare shipping documents.
  • Package Equitainers
  • Perform slow cools and tracking of cooled semen quality trends.
  • Liaison with stallion and mare owners regarding cooled semen quality.
  • Assist with end of season summary reports.
  • Processing semen collections for frozen semen storage and distribution.
  • Freezing ejaculates collected on site and off when in mobile lab.
  • Perform post-thaw analyses.
  • Frozen semen client reports
  • Maintain data records and tracking.
  • Send weekly and final reports to clients.
Media Production
  • Assist with in-house extender production
  • Assist with affiliate laboratory extender production
  • Perform extender bioassays.
  • Package and ship extender orders.
  • Maintain data records and tracking.
  • Extender laboratory equipment maintenance
  • Glassware cleaning and sterlizing
Quality Control 
  • In-house Quality Control
  • Assist with performing mobile lab counts and cultures.
  • Assist with QC post-thaws from affiliate labs.
  • Receive incoming tanks from affiliate labs.
  • Perform post-thaws and data into data score sheets.
Endocrinology
  • Perform blood draws on horses and dogs.
  • Package and ship specimens for outside testing.
  • Run various bloodwork including: Progesterone Assays, Foal IGG, Serum Amyloid A Assays and Brucellosis Tests.
Storage and Distribution
  • Packaging of frozen semen shipments for domestic and international distribution.
  • Assist with inventory of inbound frozen semen shipments.
  • Weekly LN2 checks of all frozen semen storage tanks.
  • Assist with pre-season check of vapor shippers.
  • Charge vapor shippers.
Skills Required:
  • Basic computer skills
  • Proficient in basic laboratory procedures - Pipetting, dilutions, microscopy, etc.
  • fundamental understanding of equine reproduction and breeding management.
  • Prior experience with semen collection and evaluation procedures is beneficial.
  • Training in specific SBS protocols will be provided.

Laboratory Experience:  1 year (preferred)

Job Type:  Full-time

Salary: From $16.00 per hour
