Mare Breeding Management
SBS Veterinary Services offers comprehensive mare management services at our facility in Chesapeake City, Maryland. We provide complete breeding management, including artificial insemination with fresh, cooled, and frozen semen, as well as advanced low-dose and deep-horn insemination techniques. Additionally, SBS Veterinary Services offers reproductive evaluations and diagnostic and therapeutic treatments to ensure optimal reproductive health for mares.
- Breeding Soundness Exams
- Fresh, Cooled or Frozen Semen Breeding Cycle Management
- Uterine swab culture, cytology, and/or low volume uterine lavage for culture and cytology
- Endometrial biopsy
- Uterine therapy with large volume lavage and antibiotic and non-antibiotic treatments
- Application of misoprostol to oviductal papilla via deep horn technique
Foaling
SBS Veterinary Services offers exceptional care for foaling mares through our specialized Foaling Program. This program provides thorough late-term pregnancy monitoring, tailored neonatal care, and ensures a veterinarian is present for every foaling. Designed to reduce the stress and risk of unattended or unpredictable foalings, this service gives breeders peace of mind. - Management of low-risk and medium-risk pregnant mares
- Pre-foaling monitoring and care including examinations and appropriate vaccinations
- Daily and overnight monitoring of pregnant mares for parturition
- Foaling attendance by veterinarian and assistant
- Assisted vaginal delivery with option for trailering to New Bolton Center for controlled vaginal delivery or cesarean section, if needed
- Neonatal examination and bloodwork
- Routine foal monitoring with scheduled thoracic ultrasounds, vaccinations, and deworming protocols according to AAEP guidelines
Embryo Transfer
SBS Veterinary Services offers a highly successful Embryo Transfer Program, for older mares unable to carry a foal, performance mares in competition, or valuable mares requiring multiple pregnancies. We can manage and flush your donor mare, then ship the embryo to your desired facility, place it into a mare from our own recipient herd, or transfer it into your own recipient mare. Our board-certified theriogenologists, Dr. David Scofield and Dr. Elena Martinez de Andino, provide expert care and precision for optimal embryo transfer success.
- Breeding management and uterine flush for embryo recovery
- Synchronization with our SBS owned recipient herd for fresh or vitrified in-vivo embryo transfer
- Evaluation and synchronization of client-owned recipients for fresh or vitrified in-vivo embryo transfer
- Processing of fresh in-vivo embryos for shipment to outside recipient herd or to specialized laboratory for vitrification
Assisted Reproduction Techniques
SBS Veterinary Services is proud to offer advanced assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs) for mares, including transvaginal follicle aspiration (TVA) for oocyte recovery. Led by board-certified theriogenologist Dr. Elena Martinez de Andino, who trained at Texas A&M, TVA is available for both reproductively challenged and fertile mares. Oocytes collected through TVA are sent to an ICSI lab, and the resulting embryos can be transferred back into one of our recipient mares or preserved for future use. This cutting-edge procedure is ideal for immediate embryo transfer or genetic preservation.
