1987 – SBS Incorporated by Paul Loomis
Select Breeders Services (SBS) was founded in 1987 to advance the equine frozen semen industry. Its origins date back to 1981 when Paul Loomis, then a graduate student at Colorado State University, began developing methods to freeze stallion semen. After his studies, Paul led the largest frozen semen breeding program in the U.S. at Green Hills Farm, achieving a milestone in 1984 with the birth of the first foal conceived from imported frozen semen. SBS’s first commercial breakthrough was with Abdullah, an Olympic-winning stallion whose semen was exported worldwide, setting a new standard for equine breeding.
1992 – Select Breeders Southwest Founded by Paul Loomis & Whit Byers
In 1992, Paul Loomis and Whit Byers partnered to form Select Breeders Southwest (SBSW) in Aubrey, Texas. The industry’s first fully equipped mobile laboratory was introduced by SBSW in 1994 to serve customers all over the country, offering them the same high quality technology as in our main permanent locations. Whit and Kathy Byers traveled extensively to bring SBS frozen semen services to all corners of the country. Whit was the managing partner of SBSW for 18 years until his retirement in 2010.
2000 – The SBS Network of Affiliated Laboratories is Launched
In 1998, after traveling to Italy to freeze semen on several standardbred stallions, Paul Loomis and Dr. Sandro Barbacini partnered to form SBS Europe in order to bring the SBS system of freezing semen to European clients. The concept of the SBS Network of Affiliated Laboratories was further developed in 1999 and 2000. The goals were to bring SBS semen freezing and related reproductive services to breeders throughout Europe and the United States using standardized protocols and employing strict quality control standards to the production of equine frozen semen. Dr. Ed Squires was retained as a consultant to SBS and has been instrumental in securing agreements with prominent veterinary clinics.
2011 – SBS Moves Their Headquarters to Chesapeake City, Maryland
After having spent 18 successful years located on the property of Hilltop Farm in Colora, MD, it was time for a move to a larger, custom built facility. In January 2011, we celebrated the opening of a brand new 13,000 sq ft headquarters in Chesapeake City, Maryland. This facility houses a collection shed with a hydraulic phantom, 8 large stalls, a semen processing lab, large tank storage room and offices.
2013 – Paul Loomis & Dr. David Scofield Establish SBS Veterinary Services
In order to expand the veterinary care and equine management services provided by SBS, Paul Loomis and Dr. David Scofield (a Board Certified Theriogenologist) founded a partnership to form Select Breeders Veterinary Services (SBS-VS) in 2013. Through this new division of SBS, Dr. Scofield and his team are able to provide reproductive management as well ambulatory care and on-site veterinary services for our clients.
2021 – Dr. David Scofield & Jonathan Clark Take Ownership of SBS
After decades at the helm of SBS, Paul Loomis began his retirement process in 2021, marking the end of an era for the company he helped build from its inception. Passing the torch to Dr. David Scofield and Jonathan Clark was a natural transition, as both are well-equipped to carry forward the legacy of integrity and innovation established under Paul’s leadership. While stepping back, Paul remains involved as a consultant, continuing to guide the business on its steady course. Dr. Scofield and Jonathan Clark are poised to leverage the solid foundation Paul created to navigate SBS toward a thriving future.
